The human mouth is home to a complex microbial environment. Different areas, such as the teeth, gums, tongue, and tonsils, provide unique surfaces where bacteria, viruses, and fungi reside. Scientific studies have identified around 600 microbial species in the oral cavity, with their composition changing as we age.
Most of these microorganisms are found within a complex, multi-species structure known as the oral biofilm – more commonly called dental plaque. When oral hygiene is consistently maintained, the bacterial community typically stays stable.
